Hong Kong International Airport HKG/VHHH is a gateway to Asia as well as a major regional cargo transshipment point. The airport is commonly referred to as Chek Lap Kok to differentiate it from its predecessor, Kai Tak. The airport’s alternate name originates from the manmade island on which it is built. Although there were approximately six months of various service interruptions when it first opened, Hong Kong International has received eight World Airport Awards in the last 11 years for customer satisfaction. It serves as the hub for Hong Kong’s flag carrier, Cathay Pacific.

Terminal 1 is the airport’s main building. It was the world’s largest passenger terminal when it began operations in 1998. The architectural design of the building enables natural light to disperse across the expansive vaulted ceiling. The two main terminals and two smaller midfield concourses contain 70 passenger loading gates. Approximately 90 different airlines operate flights to Hong Kong from over 150 destinations, including 40 cities on mainland China. Terminal 2 and SkyPlaza serve several purposes. The terminal provides all the customary airport services passengers expect from a world-class facility. SkyPlaza is located inside the terminal. It is a large entertainment and retail center that also has commercial office space. AsiaWorld-Expo is an adjacent convention center with 70,000 square meters of column-free exhibition space. SkyPier enables passengers from mainland China to access the airport and Hong Kong by ferry service.

The airport operates 24 hours a day all year-round. It showcases many state-of-the-art passenger transportation systems. Hong Kong International Airport has complimentary Wi-Fi, internet cafes for those without electronic devices, numerous eateries, convenience stores and duty-free retail shops.

The airport operates two 3,800 meter long 60 meter wide asphalt runways to support the logistical demands of transporting over 53 million passengers and 3 million tons of cargo annually. Laid out on a compass heading of 07/25, the runways are to the right and left of the main terminal building. The airport can accommodate the massive Airbus 380. The current runways are also capable of handling all next-generation aircraft currently in development. The long-term airport expansion plans include constructing a third runway. The airport’s cargo handling facility is the world’s second largest.

Hong Kong International Airport with many airlines offering cheap flights to Hong Kong has become an award-winning, cutting edge transportation facility that is adapting to the changing needs of an expanding aviation marketplace and world economy.

Bangkok International Airport, or Suvarnabhumi International Airport BKK/VTBS, is the international airport for Bangkok. It started service for domestic and all the international flights into Bangkok on September 28, 2006. Now, the airport serves as the primary hub for various airlines, including Thai Airways International, Thai Air Asia, Bangkok Airlines, and Orient Thai Airlines. It also serves as an access for international airlines providing flights to Thailand.

The airport’s location is in Racha Thewa in the Bang Phili quarter of the Samut Prakan Province. It is approximately 16 miles east of Bangkok’s city center. The King selected the name, Suvarnabhum, as it reflects the mention to the golden kingdom in Southeast Asia.

Helmut Jahn from the Murphy/Jahn Architects designed the airport, and ITOJV carried out the construction. The control tower is the world’s tallest control tower that is free standing. It also has the fourth biggest airport terminal contained in one building. It is Asia’s sixth busiest airport and is Thailand’s most active airport, processing 47.8 passengers during 2011. It is also a major cargo hub handling 96 airlines. The airport code BKK was originally used by the older Don Muean airport.

The airport’s two parallel runways are both 60 m. wide. They are 3,700 m. and 4,000 m. long. They also have two matching taxiways so that the airport can handle both flight arrivals and departures at the same time. The airport has 120 parking bays for airplanes. Fifty-one of these have contact gates, and sixty-nine have remote gates. Eight of these parking bays can manage the Airbus 380 airplanes. The airport can process 76 flights during an hour. Domestic and international airlines use the same terminal though designated to different sections of the airport. At the beginning of construction, the airport could manage at least 45 million passengers and over three million tons of cargo yearly.

For the convenience of visitors, the airport has an airport hotel, travel agent help desk and a parking garage of five stories, which can handle 5,000 vehicles.

Various forms of transportation, including rail, bus, cars and public taxis, serve the Bangkok International Airport. The Airport Rail Link is an elevated railway line that connects the passenger terminal to the city. It has two interchange stations. Passengers traveling on Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways International can check luggage at the Makkasan station. The SRT also has a commuter trains to the suburbs and connects to the airport. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority provides bus service. Long-distance bus service runs to Pattaya and Nong Kha. Limousines with flat-rate fees are located at the arrival level of the terminal.

The Number Seven Motorway connects Bangkok, the airport, and the eastern sea coast of Thailand, which is the location of most of the exported manufacturing. For those driving cars, the airport is accessible by five main routes including the Bangkok Chon Buri Motorway, the expressway from Bang Na to Bang Pakong. The primary route is by way of the motorway in northern Bangkok. Public taxis can provide transport from the airport’s ground level.

The standard way of approaching a last minute holiday deal is to say ‘you must be flexible’. We prefer to think of it like a surprise – what could be more exciting in a holiday than not knowing where you’re going to end up until just before you travel? It could take you somewhere you’ve never been before. Like South Africa. Last minute holidays from the likes of onthebeach.co.uk include deals to Cape Town. And from there, the rest of the entire African continent is your oyster. But for now, we’re going to look at three of the most popular South African destinations – and the three largest cities in the country.

Cape Town

Cape Town is an almost unbelievably alluring place. Anyone who visits once returns raving about the incredible scenery, friendly people and gorgeous weather. It’s a must-see for any globetrotting city-bagger. With 3.5 million citizens, Cape Town is the second most populous city in the country, and its political and financial capital. Renowned for its harbour and the indomitable Table Mountain, looming over the city, Cape Town remains the most visited city in South Africa. An extremely multicultural place, it is popular with tourists from all over the world.

Durban

Not as much of a hit (yet) with international tourists, Durban is nevertheless full of its own charms, and is undeniably beautiful. The busiest port in South Africa, Durban’s stunning beaches and subtropical climate makes it well worth a visit, especially for travellers planning to jump around the country to see more than one place.

Johannesburg

With a population of more than 3.9 million, Johannesburg is South Africa’s most populated city. Known locally as ‘Joburg’ and ‘Jozi’, the city is the capital of Gauteng, which is South Africa’s most wealthy province. It also boasts the biggest economy of any metropolitan area on the sub-saharan continent. One of Jo’burg’s more curious claims is as the home of more annual lightning storms than anywhere else on the globe. It is also the planet’s largest city not to have a river running through it. Famous for gold and diamonds, Johannesburg has built its economy on these precious materials, culled from the Witwatersrand mountain range that dominates the city skyline. The gold industry in particular has supported many Africans who might otherwise live in poverty. The townships that grew up around the gold mining industry eventually became absorbed into the city, which accounts for its extremely large size now. See the official Johannesburg website for more information.

Zakynthos – or Zante – is one of the Ionian Islands, off the coast of Greece. With 76 miles of gorgeous, unspoilt coastline, and a warm Mediterranean climate, it’s been popular with Greek holidaymakers for decades. And now the rest of Europe is catching on, with firms like onthebeach.co.uk running holidays to Zante at reasonably low prices (click the link for more information). There are top-notch beaches all over the island, from north to south.

But it’s not just beaches and sun in Zante. Like most of Greece, it has a long, fascinating history, with plenty to explore all over the island. Animal lovers will find much to enjoy. Turtles are the theme on Zante. There is a turtle rescue centre, which invites tourists to help in the conservation struggle for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. And Marathonissi, a small islet near the village of Keri, is even nicknamed Turtle Island, thanks to its aerial-view shape.

The most famous beach is the Navagio beach, on Zante’s southwest shore. Accessible solely by boat, Navagio is hemmed in by high cliffs on all sides, making for a wonderful sense of isolation. A pebble beach, it’s named in honour of the wreck of the MV Panagiotis (Navagio means ‘shipwreck’) which sank in 1980. Built in the shipyards of Glasgow in the 30s, the ship found its way to the Ionian Sea, where it was used to smuggle contraband cigarettes. It fell afoul of the Greek Navy following a dramatic sea chase, and has been nothing more than a tourist attraction since going down. And what an attraction it is, viewed from a small observation deck on the cliffs above.

More visual entertainment comes from the famous ‘blue caves’ around Cape Skinari. The sunrays reflecting through the blue water finds pure, white stone on the cave walls, creating an impressive show.

The aforementioned Keri is located on the island’s southernmost edge. Set into the mountains, Keri’s lighthouse is a short walk from the village. From here – even beneath the lighthouse – visitors can stand agape at the Ionian panorama.

Do not leave Zante without a trip to Bochali Hill. At its summit you’ll find a small but impressive Venetian castle, the turrets of which can be climbed to enjoy the vie across Zante. Just over the other side of Bochali is Strani, where Dionysios Solomos, Greece’s ‘national poet’, wrote the Greek national anthem.

Galeão International Airport GIG/SBGL is one of Brazil’s major gateways and the seventh busiest airport in Latin America. This joint civilian/military use airfield derives its name from the nearby Praia do Galeão or Galleon Beach which is located just in front of the current air force and former civilian passenger terminal. The beach is also where the galleon Padre Eterno of the Portuguese Navy was constructed in 1663.

The airport opened in 1923 as a military airfield and served as an Allied airbase during World War II. After the war, as air traffic to Brazil grew,
so did the importance of Galeão International.

The decision was made to transfer civilian flights from the smaller local airport to Galeão. By 1970, the airport served as the major domestic and international air hub for the nation. Proof of the airports stature was the fact that the maiden flight of the Air France Concorde in 1976 that took off from Paris landed at Galeão. In the 1979 James Bond movie “Moonraker,” the Concorde is filmed touching down at the airport. In January 1977, a new passenger terminal was constructed that came to feature the iconic public address announcements by the sultry Iris Lettieri. By 1985, however, the airport dropped to second place behind the new Sao Paulo International Airport. Galeão received the additional name of Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1999 to honor the famous Brazilian musician who was instrumental in creating the bossa nova music style. Jobim specifically mentioned the airport in his composition “Samba do aviao.”

The airport is served by over twenty airlines including Brazil’s national airlines and several international carriers such as American, Lufthansa and KLM. Passenger and cargo aircraft can utilize the airfield’s two runways. Laid out on compass headings 10/28 and 15/33, the paved runways are 4000 and 3100 meters long respectively. The two passenger terminals and 24 jetways have been recently upgraded and can serve 7.5 million regional and international passengers per year. Passengers can access the airport using the Red and Yellow Line expressways or by bus and taxi. There are numerous restaurants and shops within the terminals which are connected by a travelator.

This airport is located 20-kilometers from the center of Rio de Janeiro and should play a major role as Brazil welcomes the world for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics in 2016.

The high capacity for passengers and goods throughout the airport influences its massive presence in Aruba.

This began international flight through the airport as Air Aruba was a main international airline before bankruptcy. The airport also served as a hub for Air KLM, but tool on Tierra Air as Aruba officially separated from the Netherlands Antilles during 1986, making the Reina Beatrix Intl Airport an independent airport still owned by the largest airport within Aruba. There are several airlines passing through the airport including Air Transat, AirTran Airways, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines, and Thomsonfly, as well as several others that continue to keep the airport thriving. Passengers from around the world frequent the airport as a top resort destination of the world.

Cyril E. King International Airport STT/TIST is the busiest in the US Virgin Islands and the eastern Caribbean. Located 3 miles west of the city of Charlotte Amalie, the elevation of the airport is 23 feet above sea level. The airport is located on the southwestern side of St. Thomas and has an elevation of 23 feet. As the capital of the Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie is also the largest city with a population of around 19,000.

Completed in 1990, the airport was formerly known as Harry S. Truman Airport. It was renamed for the US Virgin Islands’ second elected governor, Cyril Emmanuel King. The airport is situated on 280 acres. The runway measures 7,000 feet to accommodate larger jets. Made of grooved asphalt, it is in fair condition.

The airport terminal operates 11 gates. Major US carriers provide service to the island from many US cities such as New York, Washington D.C., Charlotte, Chicago and Miami. The flight from New York to St. Thomas takes four and a half hours. Local Caribbean airlines such as Air Sunshine, Air St. Thomas and Caribbean Wings offer flights on prop planes or smaller jets. Connecting flights to the British Virgin Islands through King Airport have become quite popular. Those traveling to St. John on major airlines must fly into King International Airport.

The airport averages approximately 209 aircraft operations per day. Air taxi flights represent nearly 52 percent of the daily traffic. The Virgin Islands Port Authority owns and operates King International Airport. Although the airport operates 24 hours a day, the terminal is only open between the hours of 6 am and 11 pm. The Air Traffic Control Tower operates between 7 am and 10:30 pm.

Fixed rates for taxis offer an affordable transportation option for getting to destinations on the island and returning to the airport. Passengers may also travel by ferry, with the ferry terminal located within walking distance of the airport. Ferry service takes passengers to St. John, St. Croix, Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. Seaplanes offer convenient connections for travelers going on to St. Croix and San Juan. Rental cars may be rented at counters within the airport. Currency used on the island is the US dollar.

Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport CDG/LFPG is also known as Paris Roissy. The airport is located 14 miles from Paris and takes about 45 minutes to get from the airport to the center of Paris. CDG airport has three terminals and is Europe's second busiest airport, second to England's Heathrow airport. CDG is the world's seventh busiest airport transporting more than 58 million passengers in 2010.

The airport is named after Charles de Gaulle, a World War II French General. De Gaulle founded the French Fifth Republic in 1958, the current republican constitution in France, and was President of the country for the next decade.

Terminal 1 consists of one main building for check-in and baggage claim and 7 satellite buildings for departures and arrivals connected with underground, moving walkways. Terminal 2 is designed the same as Terminal 1. Terminal 2E underwent a redesign that was unveiled in 2003. Shortly afterward in May 2004, the roof collapsed killing four passengers. The entire jetty had to be rebuilt at a cost of €100 million. Construction began in 2005 and ended in 2008. Another addition to terminal 2E is currently scheduled to be open in the fall of 2012. The new satellite is expected to service an additional 7.8 million passengers. Terminal 3 is the smallest and least busy terminal in the airport.

CDG airport is a central hub for Air France, Delta Airlines, easyJet and FedEx Express. Air France is the main carrier having hubs throughout the country and services flights to 91 different countries for a total of 156 destinations.

Scenes from CDG airport have been seen on album covers and in movies. The band U2 filmed the video for their song "Beautiful Day" at the airport just after the Concorde crash occurred. The Concorde was Air France Flight 4590 that was headed for New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The flight crashed in Gonesse, France on July 25, 2000. All passengers and crew as well as four people on the ground were killed. The aircraft was retired three years later even though it was the Concorde's only fatal crash.

Built in 1930, Thessaloniki International Airport is the largest state-owned airport in Greece. Its prime
location near Northern Greece’s ports and tourist attractions make the airport one of the busiest in Eastern Europe. As a result, it’s not surprising to learn that Thessaloniki International Airport is consistently ranked as the third busiest airport in Greece by leading industry experts.

Thessaloniki International Airport is the primary hub for important regional airlines including Astra Airlines, Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air. This is not surprising Thessaloniki International Airport also serves as an important tourist transportation hub that provides air service to destinations that are close to such tourist destinations as Chalkidiki and its surrounding area.

Thessaloniki International Airport is surrounded by beautiful views of the Aegean Sea. These views
are best seen through the windows of the airport’s terminal. The airport's terminal is divided into three floors. The ground floor provides processing and courtesy services to incoming passengers arriving at the airport. It also provides baggage services, customs services and money exchange services to people arriving at the airport.

The first floor provides the same services for outgoing passengers. It also includes 34 check-in booths that are used to prepare passengers as they board outgoing flights. The second floor features a shopping center that features a tobacco shop, a newsstand, two restaurants and several bars.

Thessaloniki International Airport features two modern runways that are well-suited for a heavy work load. The first runway is named 10/28. The second runway is named 16/34. Each of these runways measure approximately 2,400 meters. Moreover, they can be used as either a takeoff or landing area as circumstances permit.
